Alice Malsenior Walker is an American author and activist. She wrote the critically acclaimed novel The Color Purple for which she won the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. She also wrote Meridian and The Third Life of Grange Copeland among other works. Alice Malsenior Walker was born in Eatonton, Georgia, USA, on February 9, 1944. Alice is currently eighty years old. She began writing at age eight and completed her first book of poetry while she was a student at Sarah Lawrence College. She worked as an editor for Ms. magazine before moving to California in the 1970s. She is well known for being a poet. She met Martin Luther King, Jr. in the early 1960s and worked in Mississippi as a Civil Rights activist.
